Job Posting of the Day June 18, 2009

Remember that GREAT job I applied for a few months back? The one where I reported I had (what I felt was) a great phone interview? Well, it seems the job was just re-posted. I guess they still haven’t found anyone qualified for the position.

So, without further ado, this is the dream job Mike Matthews totally would have KILLED! (And I use “killed” in a good way!)

Social Media Community Specialist at AAA Mid-Atlantic

So, if you’ve got at least six years of blogging/social media/online community experience (like me), then perhaps you should apply. I realize that blogging/social media/online communities have barely been around these past six years, so it may be hard to find a qualified person. Consider that when you apply.

I wish AAA luck in finding the perfect candidate. Good on them for seeing the burgeoning social media market and responding to it with this type of position. I hope they’ll soon find a qualified candidate that suits their needs to fill this position.

sorry dude

4. Mike Matthews - June 18, 2009

Anonni,

I admitted as much at the time. You’re definitely right.

5. RSmitty - June 19, 2009

Your name is now Matt Michaels and your blog is UpWIthSunshine. You like to post positive PR about anything and everything.

What’s so bad about that?

6. Kilroy - June 19, 2009

Mike reapply !

7. annoni - June 19, 2009

If you still have thier numbers, call the peopel at AAA you interviewed with, express your continuing interest and ask “Is my blogging a problem?”

and tell them how much weight you have lost!

8. aykm - June 19, 2009

so much for their mantra which is posted all over their website – “what could you do if given the chance?” It doesn’t seem like they are willing to give anyone a chance.

9. Mike Matthews - June 19, 2009

Thanks, all.

I’ve taken annoni’s advice and sent an email inquiring about why I wasn’t offered another interview when it seems the position has yet to be filled. I stated that I understand they’re under no obligation to tell me and that I will be fine with anything they can offer. Ever since seeing the position reposted two days ago, it has bugged me a bit.

It’s bugged me because for five years, yes, I’ve said some things that many consider to be unsavory, offensive, and possibly “obscene.” However, I’d like to think that by attaching my name to everything I’ve ever written on this blog, it allows me to be taken seriously and at least have some level of personal integrity in letting people know I am who I am.

I have stayed true to myself and I feel I have stayed true to my writing. I understand it may turn off many people who don’t know me personally, but I feel the many personal friends I do have can make excellent character references in letting people know that this online persona is just that — online. I’d like to think that I am, indeed, a decent human being.

OK, enough Hallmark bullshit. I’m headed out to a nice dinner! I exercised extra today so I could bank up some calories for dinner!

Again…new name: Matt Michaels. Do it.

11. annoni - June 21, 2009

no email, too easy to ignore.

Call them on the telephone.

don’t ask “don’t you like me” in a whiney voice.

Ask for feed back on your interview. What did the interviewer perceive as your strengths and weaknesses?
If you agree with their asessment, then you didn’t get the job offer because you were not a good enough fit. no harm no foul.

BUT
If you disagree with their assesment of your skills and abilities, then you must recognize that YOU failed to convey all you have to offer.

Because of your blog you have a skill set that has value in the market place.
Because of your blog, some employers will not hire you. SOME, not all.

If you want to be a corporate web dude, focus on those who will. Focus.
re write you resume to make “new media” the centeral theme.
write a new cover letter template for this industry.
think through, write out an answer to the reasonable corporate question “what about your blog, will it reflect badly on Us? will there be future blowback?”

Get back on the horse.
